Sister Nwanyi

Sister Nwanyi runs the legendary Kuumba community centre in St Pauls. In this street history workshop she takes visitors through the history of the Kuumba Centre, which has played a pivotal role in St Pauls since the 1970s, when it became a base for young and mid-aged Rastafari people and a social gathering place for St Pauls. Today the centre has dance space and units rented out to local groups for music, printing, sewing, mental health and wellbeing, children’s afterschool classes, dancing, steel pan and other activities. The workshop shares the history of the centre, and explores Rastafari ideas, culture and philosophy, with topics ranging from veganism to changing gender roles in the community.
