Poems and Pictures

Where we are from has a deep and lasting effect on who we are. We’d like you to share something about your experiences, who you are, and where you’re from.

How to do it

A great way to share is to help build our library of ‘I am from’ poems. Start each line with ‘I am from’, and then fill in the gaps with sights, sounds, smells, tastes and experiences that matter to you. Or write a few lines introducing yourself in a micro essay. If words aren’t your thing then why not send something more visual like a photograph, drawing or a short video? Whatever you decide to share, remember that it’s all about you.

This activity gives you the chance to:

  • Reflect on experiences that made you who you are today
  • Learn about other people’s experiences
  • Reconnect with what matters to you
  • Be creative and used your imagination
  • Share with others

Tips and resources

Get inspired by reading other people's poems here, or write your poem by filling in blanks, in a template based on George Ella Lyon's 'Where I'm From'.

Have a look to see what other people are creating, and see if there are any bridging links or connections. Have you had similar experiences? Different experiences? Tell us about them.

I am from is all about reconnecting with yourself, taking time to appreciate where you’ve been and where you are now.
